Pistorius

Oscar Pistorius sentenced to 6-years in Jail for killing of girlfriend

A South African judge sentenced Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius to six years in prison for his girlfriend's murder -- the latest ruling in a drawn-out case that has transfixed the nation for years.

Pistorius killed Reeva Steenkamp at his home in an upscale Pretoria neighborhood in the early hours of Valentine's Day three years ago -- a killing he says was an accident, after he mistook her for an intruder, but one the prosecution called a deliberate act after the two had an argument. The same judge originally convicted him of manslaughter in 2014 after months of hearings, but a higher court reversed that to murder last year, leading to Wednesday's sentencing.

Messi

Messi sentenced to 2-year Jail over tax refund case

A Barcelona court has found Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, guilty of three counts of tax fraud and has sentenced them to 21 months in prison -- although neither is likely to serve any jail time. In a statement, the court also said that the sentence can be appealed through the Spanish supreme court. Under Spanish law, a tax prison sentence under two years can be served under probation, meaning Messi and his father are very unlikely to go to jail. The court has also ordered Messi to pay a fine of about €2 million ($2.2 million), while his father was dealt a €1.5m fine for the tax evasion. The prosecutors had called for jail sentences for both Messis, and the court decided to hand out such a punishment, although both of them denied any willful wrongdoing. Lionel Messi admitted in court last month that he signed many documents without reading their contents and that he visited a notary's office to go through with setting up a company to handle his finances without understanding what was going on. In 2013, the Barcelona player was set to avoid facing any charges, as the Spanish revenue service initially accepted that he had no knowledge of any wrongdoing and instead pressed all charges against his father However, in October 2014 the state prosecutor decided to continue with the charges, and during June's court case its representative, Mario Maza, said that the Argentina captain's claims of not understanding how the system worked were not acceptable, as even children knew that taxes had to be paid in full. When news of the investigation first broke in the summer of 2013, the Messis paid over €5m in arrears and extra charges. They are also believed to have paid €10m in taxes due on the image-rights income for 2010 and 2011. In February, Messi's teammate Javier Mascherano was given a one-year prison sentence for not properly paying his taxes. The sentence was deferred for two years after his legal team rejected the option to pay a new €280,000 ($312,000) fine, which it considered excessive.

Tony Blair dragged  UK  into Iraqi was   to war based on flawed reason - Chilcot report reveals

Tony Blair took the UK to war in Iraq before all peaceful options had been exhausted, having relied on “flawed” and unjustified assessments of the threat posed by Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction, and with almost no plan for how to run the country after the old regime was removed from power. The damning conclusions were delivered by Sir John Chilcot on Wednesday as he published his official Iraq Inquiry report, which has been seven years in the making. The report is heavily critical of Blair, for his actions both in the run-up to the invasion and afterwards, as well as other senior ministers, the intelligence agencies, and Whitehall.

Alton Sterling

African American shot dead by Police

A Chilling cell phone video surfaced Tuesday of two Louisiana cops killing a 37-year-old man selling music outside a Baton Rouge convenience store after an anonymous caller claimed he had a gun.

The grim 48-second cell phone video of the killing outside Triple S. Food Mart shows two police officers tackling and wrestling a heavy-set man in a red shirt against the hood of a car before throwing him to the pavement.

“He’s got a gun,” one officer cries while the pair pinned Sterling to the ground

You f-----g move, I swear to God,” the other cop yells, before the two draw their weapons. The terrified bystander turns the camera phone away as five shots ring out — two of which a coroner said struck Sterling in the chest and back.
