The 74th Golden Globe Awards ceremony honouring the best in film and American television of 2016 kicked off, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, The most interesting part apart from the winner is- Cliche was Meryl Streep acceptance speech for lifetime achievement awards. You have to see the video to feel the substance of that speech

Streep took the stage to accept the Cecil B. Demille Award — basically a lifetime achievement award — but didn’t say anything about her career. Instead, she spent the minutes allotted to her to speak critically of Trump and the current political climate. (Streep did so in a raspy voice, and after an introduction from Viola Davis that paid homage to Streep and her long-storied career).

“You and all of us in this room, really, belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now. Think about it. Hollywood, foreigners, and the press. But who are we? Anyway? It’s just a bunch of people from other places,” Streep said. She called out actors and their backgrounds by name and location( Dev Patell, Ryan Gosling, Viola Davies etc)

"...Hollywood is all crawling with foreigners so if you kick us all out, you will only have mixed football and the mixed martial arts which are not the Arts. They gave me three seconds to say this.

"Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence and the power to bully others, we all lose. This brings me to the press.. that means holding the principal power to account and that means outrage. That's why the founders enshrined the press and it's freedoms into our (constitution).

Streep then said the one performance that “stunned” her the most was one from Trump, who had mocked a reporter who also had a disability.

"(That's why we need)...committee to protect journalists because we will need them to go forward and we will need them to safe guard the truth.

"One more thing, Tommy Lee Jones said to me isn't it such a privilege Meryl. We should be very proud of all the work being acknowledged here tonight. As my dear late friend Princess Leia said 'take your broken heart and make it into art'."
